Lights and Shadows

Carl Rogers, the "silent revolutionary" and father of Counseling, has always maintained that each of us has the ability to flourish if placed in the conditions to do so. But also that only when we shed light on every aspect of us, even what we consider least desirable, can we change it. Only when we accept what is in us, when there is, then can we embark on a path of change and personal growth.

"A fruitful process of change in Counseling is to discover that the beautiful soul, made only of virtue, goodness, altruism, etc., is part of a false self, built to survive, be loved and accepted. Congruence is to accept the existence of its opposite, of everything we would like to see only in the other, taking responsibility for it. Each beautiful rose also has hidden thorns. " Carl R. Rogers
